Obama's Stunning Ignorance of History

"I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Obama said.

Much has been written and said about this comment. The Obama camp quickly corrected the statement. It was a great uncle and the camp liberated was Buchenwald, not Auschwitz.

At first blush, the mistakes seem innocent enough, and there was no intention to deceive. I have no quarrel with referring to a great uncle as an uncle. But for anyone with a reasonable grounding in history, it is surprising, even stunning, that Obama could think American troops liberated Auschwitz.

Two very basic facts. First, the Auschwitz camp was in Poland.  Second, it was the Soviet army that liberated this part of Europe, leading to years of Soviet domination throughout much of the continent. Neither fact is an insignificant matter. For a man seeking the presidency to be unaware of either or both is mind boggling.

Obama has a history of being sloppy with facts, which can be understandable in a long, grinding campaign.  But the real story here is the glimpse we were given into Obama's jaw dropping ignorance of history, which is also no small matter.

Agreed, the glimpse behind the curtain is fascinating.

Sorry, I disagree (2.00 / 2)

And I'm a lover of WWII history.

Let's say Obama or Clinton or McCain knew little or nothing about American Idol.  That would show that they are not familiar with a major piece of current American pop culture.  To me that would be a more striking bit of ignorance for one seeking to be the primary leader of the American people than confusion about the identity of a concentration camp closed 63 years ago or its liberators. But, I sure wouldn't regard this revelation as bringing up serious questions about the candidate's suitability for office.

Get used to this folks. I'm sure this whiz kid could name you every camp, the date it was liberated, by whom, he could even tell you what the weather was like on each day.

It looks like we'll have the plague of this McSame-iac until the election. Then he can go back to his troll home in some cave.

What is just so comical about morons like these is their total self-delusion. Bush is perhaps the most ill-informed President ever. Obama, when he takes office, will be one of the best informed.

He didn't just get a law degree, he was President of the Harvard Law Review. He didn't just practice law, for many years, he taught Constitutional law at the reknowned University of Chicago Law School, and was one of the most popular professors.

Bush has 8 years filled with the most ill-informed speech imaginable. Obama has 6 months of some of the best rhetoric this country has seen in a generation.

But he makes a minor slip like this, and is assailed for "stunnning ignorance of history."

Sigh, looks like a long campaign.

Re: Obama's Stunning Ignorance of History (none / 0)

Just out of curiosity...

Will you vote for Sen. Obama in November?

If Sen. Clinton is somehow able to usurp the power of pledged delegates and magically convince virtually every SD who's left to support her, I would find it undemocratic and offensive, and I would be outraged because the simple facts are these: Obama has outworked and outsmarted Clinton from day one of this primary campaign and has earned the right to be his party's standard bearer.

Still, if she pulled off her underhanded miracle, sickened as I would be, I would vote for her in November. Why?

Because I'm a proud Democrat, and even a race-baiting, lie-spewing, character-challenged Democrat (that would be Hillary) is still a thousand times better than Grandpa Simpson.
